| NE-DNA

NE is a serine protease belonging to the same family as chymotrypsin, exhibiting broad substrate specificity. Neutrophil elastase is secreted by neutrophils during inflammatory processes, degrading both bacteria and host tissues. It also localizes to neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) via high affinity for DNA, an unusual characteristic for serine proteases. Like other serine proteases, it contains a charge relay system comprising a catalytic triplet of histidine, aspartic acid, and serine residues. These residues are dispersed throughout the primary sequence of the polypeptide but converge in the folded three-dimensional conformation of the protein. The gene encoding neutrophil elastase, ELA2, consists of five exons.
